* Hsiyu Fortress

The Hsiyu Fortress is located on the highland facing the ocean in the Waian Village of Hsiyu Township. This fortress was one with canons built by Governor Mingchuan Liu. During the Sino-France War in 1884, Liu persisted in the war to keep Taiwan from falling into the enemy's hands. In 1885, when Taiwan was established as a province, Liu was assigned as the first governor to defend the island. ¡@ ¡@

The fortress covers an area of 8.15 acres with high walls on all sides. Inside the walls, four canons were installed on stone altars. Under the altars, there is a fork shaped tunnel 13 feet wide and 11 feet high. It once served as the base of Ching Dynasty's navy with 5,000 soldiers stationed in the fortress. ¡@ ¡@

All the historical events are now gone. Only the fortress remains. It symbolizes the spirits of national heroes in pioneering and defending against the enemy, and remains a silent witness of history. A visit to this fortress triggers one's imagination of the old times as well as lament for the hardship endured by the pioneers.¡@ ¡@

The fortress has been designated as the first grade national relic by the Ministry of the Interior.

* Hsiyu Lighthouse

The lighthouse was built in 1778. It is also called the Fisherman Island Lighthouse. Waian Village is a small fishing village at the southwest tip of the Fisherman Island. The west coast used to be the main destination of marine traffic between Taiwan and Hsiamen. However, due to strong currents and high waves, it was very difficult for ships to tell the direction at night. Instances of shipwreck were common. Therefore, a lighthouse was built here in Ching Dynasty, which began the construction of lighthouses all over Taiwan.¡@

The light from the current Hsiyu Lighthouse reaches as far as 20.5 nautical miles and has benefited numerous ships passing by this area. It has just been listed as the second grade national relic.
