The Flower Island Lighthouse
The
Flower Island is the westernmost tip of Penghu Archipelagos and
a geological abnormality in them. The bottom rock base is probably
formed by granite. The surface geology mainly consists of Íj©¥, very
different from the basalt rock common in Penghu. ¡@ ¡@
The legendary
deity footstep below the east coast cliff is said to be have been
left by Deity Tongbin Lyu, whose other footstep is left on the Tientai
Mountain on Wanan Island. ¡@ ¡@
The lighthouse
on the island's northwest tip lights up more than ten nautical miles
of the ocean and has been called the "Light of Flower Island."
*Birds
on Cat Island
The Cat Island
is an uninhabited island in the southwest waters of Penghu. It consists
of the Big Cat Island and the Little Cat Island. Viewed from afar,
they resemble two cats looking at each other, and thus named accordingly.
The highest point of 79 meters above sea level at the southwest
tip is the highest point of the Penghu Archipelagos.¡@ ¡@
This island
is the habitat of over ten thousand swallow gulls, most of them
white brow swallow gulls and dark swallow gulls. When the gulls
take to the sky, their wingspans cover the sky and their voices
sound like thunder. It is a rare bird paradise in the world, and
has been designated as a sea bird reservation area by the Penghu
County Government.
*The
Virtuous Souls of Seven Beauties
Chimei Island
used to be called the Big Island. It is the southernmost island
of Penghu. There is a pan-island roadway, making the traffic very
convenient. The Nanfu Port is the most prosperous place in Chimei,
similar to a "little Mukung." The Nanfu Lighthouse is the southernmost
lighthouse of Penghu.¡@ ¡@
There
is a beautiful story about this island. The Seven Beauty Tomb is
the relics of this story of virtue. As the story goes, Japanese
came upon this island at the beginning of the Ming Dynasty. At the
time, there were seven young ladies washing clothes by a well. Trying
to avoid being harassed by the Japanese, they plunged into the well
one after another. The local people filled the well to make a tomb
for them. Later on, seven ¬KÝß¾ðgrew from the well with green foliage
all year round and perfumed flowers. ¡@
Chimei used
to be nicknamed the "widow's island". There is a reef extending
from the
coast underneath the Nanfu Lighthouse in the shape of a woman lying
flat, which is the Wanfu Rock. Legend has it that a woman waiting
for her loved one to come home from a fishing trip turned into the
rock. Though the story may not be true, it tells the hardship of
earning a living as a fisherman in the days bygone. ¡@
The Tingfong
Wonder is located on the north coast of Chimei. The wide surface
area was barren due to strong winds and rain all year round, resembling
the "Moon World" in Taiwan. There is a stone-enclosed fishing area
in the shallow waters nearby. It is made into a dual heart shape
by stacking stones. The graceful shape is actually a primitive facility
for catching fish.

Tienho Temple
Tienho Temple
is the earliest established temple of Machu-the guardian goddess
of fishermen. It tops the list of relics in Mukung. It was built
in 1592 to worship Machu. In 1595, the Empyreal Court of Ching Dynasty
approved the proposal of a governor to grant Machu the title of
Tienho. Thus the temple is also called Tienho Temple. ¡@ ¡@
The temple was
built by famous architects from the Tangshan area. Every part
of the temple, including the wall edge, hallway pillars, arch, wood
shield, window frame and wall decorations is made with the utmost
refined style. Besides, not even one single nail was used in the
entire structure. It is the utmost artistic presentation of styling
and sculpture. The temple was restored in 1985 to present a new
style.
There is also
a tablet in memory of Yojong Sheng's success in persuading Dutch
invaders to retreat, which is also the earliest tablet found in
Taiwan area. At present, the tablet is displayed in the Chingfong
Room on the second floor. The tablet was honored by a nine-dragon
golden frame given by Emperor Kanghsi, on which says "Same contribution
as from Heaven," making it the first grade relic of R.O.C. and the
treasure of Penghu.
*
Shekung Temple
It is located
in downtown Makung on Central Street. Built in Emperor Kanghsi's
rule in Ching Dynasty, it is now listed as the third grade relic
of R.O.C. The temple worships the idol of Shelang, who served as
the Shueishe Governor and contributed a great deal to the Ching
Dynasty. The temple was built in his memory and renamed Shekung
Temple in the 23rd year of Emperor Taokuang's rule.

Wanchuan Well
It is located
in downtown Makung on Central Street. Originally named Makung Big
Well, or Shechuan Well, it is located right across from Tienho Temple.
In 1683, Shelang landed on Makung with his army, but soldiers could
not find fresh water to drink. Shelang prayed to Goddess Machu for
water. Later on, enough sweet spring did come out of the big well
to quench the thirst of ten thousand soldiers. Hence, the well is
called Wanchuan-"ten thousand soldiers" in Chinese-Well.
