*The
rainbow over the sea
Chungcheng Bridge,
Yongan Bridge, Kuahei Bridge and Hsiaomen Bridge are all bridges
connecting various islands of the main island of Penghu. These bridges
are all constructed under extreme conditions and make special scenery.
They are all considered architectural masterpieces of Penghu.

Chungcheng Bridge
connects the Penghu Island and the Chungtueng Island, which is then
connected to Baisha by Yongan Bridge. These bridges were made to
accommodate two-lane traffic. On the left hand side is the Dachang
Island and Yuanbei Island stands on the right, forming a beautiful
picture of hills and the sea. ¡@
Located between
Baisha and Fishermen Islands, Kuahei Bridge crosses the Homen channel
with high waves and strong currents. It was completed at the end
of 1970. With the total length of 2478 meters, 319 of which are
built on land and 2159 the bridge itself, it is the first deep sea
bridge in the Fareast region. It is now under expansion to accommodate
two-lane traffic in the future. The rainbow shaped gate at the beginning
of the bridge is a beautiful symbol of this rainbow over the sea.
Taking a stroll on the bridge to enjoy the breathtaking ocean view
and listen to the waves breaking on the rocky shores is a great
joy of life. ¡@ ¡@ ¡@
Between the
Fishermen Island and Hsiaomen Island stands the Hsiaomen Bridge.
It is nicknamed the "Little Kuanhei Bridge". With different landscapes
on two sides of the bridge, it presents entirely another picture
from the Kuahei Bridge.

Sunrise at Kuolin and sunset at Hsiyu
The first light
of the day scatters on the ocean and the orange sunset showers the
land. Sunrise at Kuolin and sunset at Hsiyu are the two famous attractions
of Penghu. Kuolin is located on the east tip of the Penghu Island
and named after the crop of Kuoye trees in the village. At the break
of dawn, the golden sun and bright sunshine rise above the Taiwan
Straits to brighten the entire sky while the profile of the Central
Mountains in Taiwan comes vaguely in the background. ¡@ ¡@
¦Hsiyu
is the second largest island in Penghu. Most people think that the
area around the Kuanyin Pavilion near Makung City provides the best
angle to watch sunset. The second best spot is the Kuahei Bridge
and Hsiyu's coast. At sunset, the sky is splashed with colorful
rays. Sometimes you may spot a small boat passing by the sinking
sun, whose remaining golden rays lingers on the waves to add an
incredible colorful moment to nature.¡@ ¡@ ¡@

The uninhabited islands
The
scenery on the uninhabited islands of Penghu has been kept intact
without human intervention. The primal conditions on these islands,
their unique basalt rock formations and rich ecology bring ever
more surprises to visitors. Since they are designated as natural
reservations, they are endowed with remarkable, unique and rare
resources of historical values. For the sake of protecting these
islands, most trips take visitors for a boat tour around them only.
For instance, the Great Aunt Island located off the coast of Chikan
is the largest uninhabited island in the North Sea area and also
the main location of seaweed production. There is also a surprisingly
large number of rare species of birds nesting on the island. Hsienchiao
Island is loated between Chikan Village of Baisha Township and Chipei
Island. White sand beaches cover all of the island, which is formed
by ¤ô¦¨©¥. There are stone-enclosed ponds in these
waters and sardines and bonitos are common. These are the earliest
known manmade fishery in Taiwan area. In addition, the pillar shaped
rock formations on Chishan Island and Tingko Island are masterpiece
sculptures and gifts from God. The yellow flowers that bloom between
the basalt rock cracks and the beautiful songs of little singing
birds on the meadows turn these islands into a paradise.

Kuanyin Temple
The Kuanyin
Temple right by the Penghu Bay is a temple that worships the goddess
of Kaunyin. It was once destroyed during the Sino-France marine
war and reconstructed in the 17th year of Emporer Kuanhsu's rule
in Ching Dynasty. The temple is built in a simple style in a nice
and quiet environment. The beach in front of the Temple is now a
famous tourist attraction. In summer time, the beach is packed with
the young and the old. Sometimes you can see a few windsurfers and
women picking shells, which adds a leisure air to it. At sunset,
many people take a strong along the jetty and watch the sun sinks
behind the Hsiyu on the opposite side. The beautiful scenery let
you forget all your mundane thoughts and become part of the nature's
great creations.¡@ ¡@
The Penghu Youth
Center of YMCA is located right by the Kuanyin Temple, only 5 minutes'
walk from the downtown of Makung. The center has a classical outlook
and unique architectural style, a European style building rarely
seen in Penghu. However, the materials of the building consist of
basalt rocks and coral stones, with rich local colors.

Cultural Center is located in Yangmin District in Makung. Beautifully
built, the building houses the Chungcheng Library, Chungcheng Memorial
Hall and Artifact Exhibition Hall. It is a large-scale building
for cultural purposes and the center of cultural, educational, arts
and folk activities in Penghu. ¡@
Located on the
southeast side of the Cultural Center, the Gymnasium is a modern
construction built for the purpose of developing public physical
education and promoting health and physical activities. The Gymnasium
covers a wide area and has comprehensive facilities. Located next
to the Cultural Center and Makung High School and Makung Junior
High School, it is bound to benefit the development of physical
education tremendously.¡@ ¡@
The Martyrs
Shrine is located on the central south side of the Cultural Center
and faces the newly completed Third Pier in Makung. The shrine is
located in tranquil surroundings. The shrine is mainly dedicated
to the fallen heroes of China's wars. Spring and fall worshiping
rituals are solemnly held to honor them.
*Breaking
waves at the Fongkuei
The
coast at Fongkuei District is lined with pillar shaped basalt rock.
Caves and canals are everywhere. Powerful waves break against the
rocky shores to create splashes that shows rainbow colors under
the sun and form a natural wonder. The ocean currents reach deep
into the eroded canals underneath the rock layers and spray to the
air through cracks on the surface. It sounds like an air box, thus
named Fongkuei-"wind closet" in Chinese. Holding a fishing rod in
hand while listening to the howls of breaking waves is an exciting
and interesting experience. The Lingdewen Temple is located on the
peninsula of Fongkueiwei. It has a history over two hundred years
and houses an empyreal boat more than ten meters long. It is frequented
by a huge number of worshipers. You may want to pay a visit while
in the neighborhood.
